CERAMICS-ENTERING THE REALM OF FINE ART
Our thanks to Dr. Alka Pande ( Art historian ) for her article on Ceramics - The Transition of Ceramics from Function to a Form of Artistic expression is a facscinating tale rooted in history and evolution. Spread over centuries, countries, dynasties, philosophies.., From Greek funerary vases to Mayan vessels from Indus Valley pottery to Japanese Tea Jars, From Chinese glaze colours to Raku, Ceramics has come a long way..,

GREEK pottery - The ancient Greeks produced pottery for their own locale They made pottery for everyday use. Most surviving pottery consists of drinking vessels, such as amphorae, kraters ( bowls for mixing wine and water), hydria( water jars), libration bowls, jugs, cups and painted funeral urns.

Chinese pottery - dates back to 8000 years. The first few objects were hand-moulded eathenware vessels. Blue -and-white porcelain was first produced under the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368AD), Potters of the subsequent Ming Dynasty ( 1368-1644AD) perfected these blue-and-white wares so that they soon came to represent the virtuosity of the Chinese potter. Five-coloured porcelain wares became famous under the patonage of the Qing dynasty.

Korean pottery -

Japanese pottery -

Indian pottery -

*********************** ART NEWS FLASH *****************************

The art market for Old Master, Impressionist and Contemporary works, has experienced an unprecedented dramatic growth in the last eighteen months. Art has out performed many other investment portfolios such as property and equities amongst others. Art has not only become a lucrative and sound investment, but also a "must have" commodity as shown by the sheer number of art hedge funds sprouting up. The largest expanding area is in Contemporary art, which now out performs all other categories. The future is not just about the European and American heavyweights such as "Hirst", "Rego" and "Koons"; it is about the artists from the worlds emerging economies, India, China, Russia and Africa.
